A top-secret division of the CIA known as 'The Firm' has built a hi-tech, weapons-laden new helicopter called 'Airwolf', but after the chopper's test flight, the craft's twisted creator, Dr. Moffet, turns the lethal firepower onto the flight tower, before taking off in the chopper with his two co-pilots to Libya. Archangel, the head of the division who built Airwolf, is badly wounded in the assault but not out of the game, and calls upon ace combat pilot Stringfellow Hawke to take the task of bringing back Airwolf from Libya, where Moffet is using it to destroy for his own sadistic pleasure. Hawke nowadays is a recluse, living only with his dog Tet in a cabin in the mountains, since his brother St. John's disappearance in the Vietnam War. Archangel leaves one of his agents, Gabrielle, to brief Hawke, and their fiery relationship soon brings them together. Hawke eventually agrees to accept the mission, calling on his only close friend and mentor, Dominic Santini to aid him, but will only complete the mission on his terms he'll retrieve Airwolf from Moffet's evil clutches, but only in exchange for Archangel using his connections to find definate information about the fate of St. John...
Hawke and Santini continue their mission to retrieve Airwolf from Dr. Moffet's twisted clutches and bring it back out of Libya to the US. With the Libyan allies Moffet has won by using the chopper to destroy American craft, the task is not going to be easy, and Hawke is only prepared to hand Airwolf back over to the Firm if he receives satisfactory information about his brother's fate. But the mission has deadly consequences for Gabrielle...
Archangel sends Hawke undercover as an exchange pilot in the US Air Force when the Firm has reason to suspect that a disillusioned pilot is planning to steal a high-tech tactical jet plane and deliver it to Russians. Detouring in their way to a top-secret Airwolf mission for the Firm, Hawke flies Dominic to the island to attend the funeral, only for it to end in an argument with his bitter ex-wife Lila. Returning from their mission, they hear that Lila was murdered the previous night, and Dominic is arrested as the prime suspect. When Archangel is ordered not to allow Firm involvement as not to risk uncovering the secret mission, Hawke heads to the luxurious San Remo to investigate the murder for himself, and finds the island is living in the shadow of a new gambling casino, run by a very shady character with great influence in the area...

Arriving in Airwolf in a war-torn South American country, Hawke, Dominic and Caitlin rendezvous with "living legend" freedom fighter leader El Gato, in a mission to rescue a US scientist who is being held captive. Dominic and Caitlin wait at the pick-up point as Hawke and El Gato set off on the rescue bid, but during the escape after locating the scientist, El Gato is killed, and Hawke's radio to Airwolf is destroyed. Hawke sets out to help the girl find out her true identity, and just what trouble she was in that had led to people trying kill her - but when the hit-men who had dumped her into the lake find out that she is still alive, they set out to see that neither girl or Hawke are around to uncover the truth about her...

Waking up the next day in the local hospital, he is infuriated that nobody seems to believe his story and is out looking for Jo. But when he arrives at the crash-site, there is no sign of the crash ever happened, and as St. John tries to find out what is going on, he finds that the small boom town is held in some kind of grip of fear...
