After a shocking outcome in one of his cases and a personal epiphany, Sebastian Stark just quit his old job as a defense attorney. Now looking for a new job he receives a call to meet with the LA city mayor. The mayor offers him a new job, director of the Los Angeles DA's high-profile crime unit, but with a twist, he would have to train a new team of inexperienced lawyers. Will he take that job?
The mayor counts on Sebastian to get a conviction against a blue blood drug-dealing killer of an undercover narcotics detective and, in the process, hopes Sebastian will redeem himself with the L.A.P.D. The murdered cop's partner (Henry Simmons) and most of the L.A.P.D. are hesitant to trust and help Sebastian who, as a defense attorney, often used questionable means to win acquittals for his often guilty clients. Between the friction with the L.A.P.D, the spotty eyewitness account of the victim's partner, the limited evidence, and defendant Scott Ransom's alibi and first rate lawyer (eljko Ivanek), who was once Sebastian's protg, the case is anything but a slam dunk for Sebastian's team. Taking a cue from Sebastian's "cutthroat manifesto," Madeleine convinces Casey that to quickly secure an important search warrant, they'll need to lie about something on the petition that can be explained as an oversight if later detected. Meanwhile, Sebastian finds this challenging case easier than figuring out how to form a deeper relationship with his daughter, who is now living with him full-time.
Convinced that a prominent heart surgeon actually murdered his so-called missing wife, Sebastian enlists his team's help in building a compelling case against the man. Despite not having a body to prove a murder actually occurred, Sebastian encourages his team to use creative means to secure evidence from Dr. Mitchell Sterling's home and obtain testimony from his eight-year-old son, Ethan. A DNA match to the wife's blood on the Sterling's master bedroom rug, the son's revelations of the night of his mother's alleged disappearance and suspicious phone records give the team a running start in the trial as they continue to dig for more evidence. However, after a couple of their preliminary theories don't pan out, they fear that, though they remain confident of Sterling's guilt, they may have too much riding on the testimony of his frightened young son. Meanwhile, used to living on his own, Sebastian's frustrated when Julie chides him for two-timing his
A notoriously shady, high-profile private investigator whom Sebastian often hired for his defense cases ends up being a suspect in the double homicide case that Sebastian is prosecuting. The Malibu beach house where a young couple was murdered is owned by Harry Russo, Sebastian's crooked former P.I. whom Jessica has been building a grand jury case against for the past two years. Sebastian's frustrated when the blas Russo provides a weak alibi, claims not to know the victims and, upon being pressed further about the murders, declares that he can't discuss client business. Meanwhile, smitten with her study partner, Eddie (Lanter), Julie chooses to risk her straight-A status by putting his homework needs ahead of her own.
Sebastian attempts to convict a star college quarterback and two of his teammates after a co-ed accuses them of gang raping her at a party in the players' on-campus residence. While attempting to build their case, Sebastian and his legal team must contend with a code of silence from the other players, the quarterback's lawyer and the university's chancellor, whom Sebastian asserts is protecting the university's reputation and its lucrative football team at all costs. To make matters worse, they fear that the jurors might be swayed by reports that the victim was drunk and willingly went to a private room with the accused players. Meanwhile, Sebastian takes on Julie's school after she tells him she was wrongly suspended for plagiarizing a paper and faces possible expulsion.
Martin cunningly gets the mayor and, later, Sebastian, to support having Sebastian's team prosecute on behalf of the victims of a fatal sweatshop fire, despite the fact that the case hasn't officially been deemed a crime
Sebastian hopes that his current case of a murdered 8-year-old girl will result in the exoneration of his former client, whom Jessica helped convict for a strikingly similar murder 15 years ago. Jessica, who is convinced the correct man is behind bars for the previous murder, warns Sebastian not to let his loss to her in the old case cloud his judgment on the current one. However, Sebastian quietly assigns Raina to pull information on the former case and asks his imprisoned former client, Charlie, if he can connect any of the current suspects to the past crime. Meanwhile, Julie is shocked to learn from an outside source (Bryan) that her mother may not have been faithful to Sebastian during their marriage.
Sebastian prosecutes the racially-charged case of a young African-American woman who was the targeted victim of a fatal hit and run moments after she left a party in a wealthy white neighborhood, which Julie also attended. The dead teen is Erica Hartford, an African-American scholarship student at an exclusive prep school who brought some of her friends to the otherwise all white party. As Sebastian works the case, he worries about how the high-profile lawsuit will impact Julie who was at the party, knew Erica and is friends with the prime suspect, Cat.
While prosecuting a double homicide case, Sebastian tries to protect the reputation of a young married prosecutor who was found fatally shot in a car with a dead prostitute. Sebastian's team soon learns that the dead prostitute worked for Hollywood's high-end madam, Monica Tanner, with whom Sebastian has a history that he refuses to fully disclose. This enrages Jessica, who wants nothing to get in the way of nailing the killer of one of her favorite prosecutors. Meanwhile, Sebastian is concerned about Julie's progressing romance with Eddie.
Sebastian prosecutes the case of a married socialite who says she fatally shot her lover in self-defense after trying to end their affair. Sebastian is surprised that the affluent and well-known Sara would cheat on her powerful husband with an unsavory character from the other side of the tracks, but he's even more shocked to discover that Jessica visited her friend and gave her legal advice. Meanwhile, Julie can't bear getting the silent treatment from Sebastian, who's still angry that she finagled an overnight stay with Eddie away from home.
Casey is taken hostage as a result of a case Sebastian is mounting against a millionaire arms broker who uses his import/export business as a cover. Though the FBI tries to take control of the investigation against Amir Khan, Sebastian and Jessica contend he's under their jurisdiction for selling explosives to Los Angeles gangs. Working against the clock before the FBI succeeds in federalizing the case, Sebastian and the police attempt their sting operation earlier than planned. When the bust fails and their panicky government informant goes into hiding, Sebastian thinks things can't get worse -- until Casey's taken hostage and his life is at risk.
Sebastian prosecutes a suspected serial killer accused of murdering five women and seriously injuring a sixth who escaped from his house. The case seems like a slam dunk, but the traumatized victim is reluctant to testify and the suspect insists on acting as his own lawyer, a move which proves to be brilliant rather than foolhardy.
Sebastian prosecutes the murder of a widely reviled billionaire real estate developer who was having tabloid-headline problems with his beautiful young second wife. Sebastian quips that it would be easier to list who wouldn't want to kill ruthless billionaire Brandon Crawford as he and his team members begin to investigate suspects such as Crawford's estranged second wife, Sonja, and his reportedly resentful 16-year-old son, Dylan. Meanwhile, fearing for Julie's safety in the wake of his last case, Sebastian hires a bodyguard to shadow her whenever she leaves their home.
Sebastian and his legal team prosecute the case of a tabloid headline-making Hollywood starlet who appears to have been chased off the road to her death by overzealous paparazzi. Evidence at the crash site causes the police to theorize that hard-partying rising star Taylor Mays may have been run off the road by a member of the paparazzi who chased her after she attempted to sneak out the back door of a hot nightclub. In addition to questioning various paparazzi suspects, Sebastian and his team also investigate whether there is any relevance to the fact that, on the night of her death, Taylor had reportedly broken up with a mystery man and gotten into a public brawl with a rival starlet.
The wife of an ultraconservative judge, who is known for stiff sentences and twice tried to get Sebastian disbarred, is murdered in an apparent robbery attempt at LAX airport. The judge, awaiting confirmation to the Federal Court of Appeals, becomes the chief suspect when Sebastian discovers that his marriage was in trouble. Back at home, Julie learns that Neal will no longer be her bodyguard, so she plans an elaborate dinner to say farewell.
Sebastian puts his own legal career on the line by submitting to his long-time friend's pleas not to alert the police that the friend found the body of one of his firm's interns where his firm's party had just taken place. Sebastian is shocked when his friend, Christian Chambers (Cole), summons him to the hotel suite where his firm partied earlier that night, shows him the body of one of his firm's female interns and begs him to help keep the mysterious death from turning into a scandal that would financially ruin his firm. As payback for a huge former favor, Sebastian eventually counsels Christian to leave the hotel unnoticed, hire a lawyer and let the housecleaning staff discover the body. Sebastian regrets this decision more than ever when the body is found in a ravine the next morning and he is forced to keep his knowledge of the case a secret from his team when it's assigned to them. Meanwhile, Julie gets Isaac to get her out of jail when she is arrested for drunk driving and continues to keep Sebastian in the dark about her illegal transgression.
Isaac disapproves of Sebastian's accusatory approach toward the decorated black cop (Clifton Powell) and his white partner who claim self-defense in a controversial shooting that killed an upstanding black teen and hurt his drug-dealing cousin.
Sebastian, Raina, the cold-blooded killer they're prosecuting and an entire courtroom of people are taken hostage by a gun-wielding defendant from another case.
Sebastian faces an uphill battle in court when the respected head of a women's shelter (Leland Orser) creates a positive "vigilante justice" media buzz for the killing of a predatory porn producer.
Sebastian goes up against his sly, sexy former legal protge (Natasha Henstridge) when he prosecutes the case of a young professor who was pushed to his death from the balcony of his wife's ultra wealthy college boyfriend's apartment.
When an 11-year-old boy who went missing four years ago is found living a seemingly happy existence as the son of his abductor, Sebastian must disprove the kidnapper's compelling claim that he was protecting the boy from abusive parents.
Sebastian gets a second chance at justice when he puts acquitted serial killer Wayne Callison (Billy Campbell) on trial for the murder of a young woman with the same wounds as Callison's previous victims.
