When a couple splits up, the real question is who gets to keep the friends? After Alex leaves Dave at the altar, their breakup complicate their friend's lives and makes everyone question their own choices. Alex and Dave were the perfect couple, the glue that kept their social circle together. The circle includes Alex's sister Jane and her husband Brad, their gay friend Max and Penny who constantly worries about meeting the right guy. The circle rallies around good guy Dave. Alex returns alone to explain why she left Dave at the altar. It wasn't for another guy but, in fact, she's been questioning her feelings for Dave for some time. A truce is struck but will the group be able to stay together or does everyone have to choose a side? Now every event is a negotiation and there are a lot of questions to be answered. Eventually, the friends will figure it out.
Now that Dave's moved out, Alex starts looking for a new roommate with help from her sister who doesn't think she's a very good judge of people. Not quite ready for a new relationship, Dave gets more than he bargained for when his one-night-stand evolves into "chicksand".
Brad resists Jane's idea that they befriend a new couple she's picked out. Max and Dave are at a loss to figure out why food and other items keep going missing from their apartment until Alex tells Max that Dave walks and eats in his sleep. Alex meets a cute guy while hanging around at Max and Dave's.
Max's parents are in town and the gang tries to convince Max to tell them he's gay rather than yet again have to find someone to pose as his girlfriend. Meanwhile, Penny meets Doug who appears to be the man of her dreams.
Brad's dad, who's in town for some medical exams, gets a clean bill of health from the doctor and proceeds to let loose much to Brad's discomfort. Penny who once studied in Italy is excited when she meets a gorgeous Italian guy. Problem is, he speaks no English and she finds she can only speak Italian when she's drunk.
Max doesn't act very grateful when Brad tries to hook him up with a guy from work and Penny has second thoughts after asking Jane along to her martial arts class. Dave misses his old digs as he adjusts to living with Max so he starts hanging out at Alex's place helping out with odd jobs.
The gang starts thinking about the coming "zombie apocalypse" after watching a horror movie, so Max and Jane compete to see who would survive if zombies did take over. For his response, Dave decides to quit his boring job and open a restaurant. Trying to keep up with her current boyfriend and his friends leaves Penny exhausted.
Now that Alex and Dave are no longer a couple, those his-and-hers tattoos don't seem like such a good idea anymore. Jane meddles when Max passes on what she considers the perfect guy and there are unexpected results when Brad takes on what he thinks is the world's worst waiter.
Dave's excited that the high school teacher who had a big influence on his life is in town. But when Penny goes on a date with Alan, she realizes he isn't quite what Dave thinks. Max organizes a protest against the coffee chain that has moved into the shop next to Alex's.
Alex drags Penny out on a series of girls' night outs. Dave convinces Max to help him hunt down the guy who ruined his wedding. Jane and Brad have a night out on the town.
An old friend gets married, and the bride thinks Alex is a jinx; Penny and Derrick pretend to be engaged.
Alex and Jane's sibling rivalry heats up; Dave dates an attractive woman (Bre Blair) with an unusual quirk; Penny gets an assistant.
