Charity Begins at Home
Ben is ashamed at an art project (a poorly molded heart made of clay) that he intends to give his dad as a birthday gift. Especially when he learns Mike and Carol were able to afford more expensive gifts. Ben frets over his predicament to Mike, who gives him a can and asks him to go out and collect money from his neighbors, claiming it's for charity. Come Jason's birthday, Ben presents him with an automatic 35-mm camera. Wow, Jason's excited that he got something he also wanted. But also wow, since he wonders how Ben could afford something so very expensive. Even under questioning, Ben doesn't answer, but Mike lets slip what happened. Jason's upset, especially since Mike gave his impressionable brother some non-serious advice that ended up getting taken seriously, and as a result, ended with the theft of cash. Jason takes Ben to return the money. Oh, that ashtray ... Ben finally musters up the courage to give his father the heart sculpture; Jason is truly touched, especially since it can be used as an ashtray (and because of its shape, can be used to encourage his patients who smoke to quit the habit).
Reputation
Mike blows off studying for a test again! Eventually, it comes to the night before the big history exam, and Mike decides the only way he will pass the test (and thus, have a fighting chance to pass the class) is to write crib notes on his shoes. Principal DeWitt gives the test, to which Mike somehow knows the answers without having to look at his shoes. He's astounded that, even under extreme pressure to memorize the material, he knows the answers. Then, as he's bragging about his success, he blows it; he puts his feet up on an adjacdent desk to relax, and DeWitt sees the crib notes. Jason and Maggie are called to the school, and Mike explains that he really did know the answers; he absorbed the material as he was writing the information on his shoes. DeWitt allows Mike to take a make-up test ... this time, clad in just his underwear!

The classmate is a con man who sells Mike a "magic" rock, which supposedly will help him prepare for his speech. In the end, Mike finds he must rely on his own wits, and ends up giving a very good extemporaneous speech on fraud.

Homecoming Queen
Carol is selected to the Dewey High homecoming court. Throughout the episode, she endures many emotions; after all, she's very excited and happy that she has been accepted as one of her class' most popular students. But that's overshadowed by her extreme nervousness and insecurity; even though Carol has blossomed into a very pretty young lady, she still lives in the image of herself as a homely, nerdy, slightly overweight teen-ager (from the early seasons). One night, she has a nightmare where she is all dressed up and glamorous, until she suddenly morphs into her old self; the entire school, along with Mr. DeWitt and Mike, torment her. After seriously considering declining a spot on the homecoming court, Carol accepts the nomination. In the end, it turns out the other popular homecoming queen nominees are just as nervous as Carol is, if not more so. BTW -- Carol does NOT get to be homecoming queen, but has a great time at the dance.
Ben's First Kiss
(A girl named "Judy" seems to be attracted to Ben and his new haircut which he thought was geeky. When he tries to ask her out, she agrees only if it was at a party. Ben pretends that it is his birthday and he throws a party at his house that night (with Judy as one of the guests). Mike tricks Maggie and Jason into leaving the house before the party but they return in the middle of it when they realize that Mike had scammed them. The party ends and as Ben says goodbye to Judy outside she gives him his first kiss.)

But the jokes end quickly as Carol learns that Sandy was injured in a car accident. At the hospital, Sandy tells Carol he had driven drunk and was likely facing charges. Jason is furious when he finds out, though Maggie is a little more understanding. Carol tells Sandy she'll see him later ... but later never arrives. When they arrive home, Mike breaks the news that Sandy had died (apparently from internal bleeding that had not earlier been detected). Carol is at first in angry denial, but as Mike lets the family in on more details, it's obvious Carol is about to learn a painful lesson about drinking and driving.

So they ditch them @ a burger place, but they follow them there. Ben decides to use his last $200 to buy burgers & drinks for everyone. Then he learns that he's the 1,000,000th customer having his order on the house, winning a trophy & another $5,000! Jason & Maggie were upset with Ben's spending spree until he told him he had $5,200! Ben gets mad @ his freinds for using his friendship over money.

Mike thinks that George is faking his injury so that he could stay and Luke would have to talk to him. But the doctor tells Maggie who tells Mike that unless George stops driving trucks, he could become paralyzed. Mike talks to George and tells him to tell Luke but doesn't want Luke to pity him and doesn't anything else to do but be a trucker. Mike suggests that maybe he could open a truck stop. Luke finds George struggling to get up and they finally talk. The next day after Jason and Ben return, George tells them that he is giving up trucking and will open a truck stop and Luke's going with him. Luke says goodbye to the Seavers.
