Bernard's dodgy accountant has to go on the run, leaving him ill prepared to fill out his own tax return. In fact Bernard would rather do anything than fill it out.
After Manny's help with the tax return Bernard is pursuaded to hire him in the shop. Unfortunatly he actually sells some books, much to Bernard's annoyance.
Bernard and Manny accept a house sitting job to get away from thier new cleaner. They also drink some wine.
The shop gets a new security system that no-one can work.
Manny runs away from the bookshop into the arms of a beard loving photographer.
Fran takes up the piano. Bernard falls in love. Manny wants a break.
The temperature is rising and sending everyone mad. Manny is terrified that the temperature will reach 88 degrees, Bernard wants a Summer girlfriend that he can dump in the Autumn and Fran feels that the walls of her flat are closing in - literally. They try to cope with fan hats, frozen alcohol on a stick and offers to the landlord that he can't refuse (once Fran draws him a picture). And then the temperature hits 88 degrees...
Fran discovers that she has Mid European relatives living just around the corner - she finds them, becomes one of them, and then immediately wants to get rid of them...
Fran tries to discover her inner karma. Bernard finds positive proof that Manny is mad. And Manny discovers a new found confidence.
Bernard and Manny can't hear themselves argue because of the builders next door. Fran suggests a holiday.
Fran returns from holiday to find that Manny has resigned and Bernard is living amid a pile of rubbish, rotting food and dead badgers.
It is International Children's Book Week, and Bernard and Manny decide to write their own kids' classic and retire on the proceeds. Fran is off on a hen weekend, but still finds a way to fall out with Bernard and Manny.
Manny's parents come to stay, but Bernard cannot wait for them to leave and Fran is unhappy about pretending to be Manny's girlfriend to corroborate his letters home.
Manny places a bet on the Grand National for Bernard who immediately becomes addicted to the thrill of gambling having previously expressed no interest. But his losses mount, and he starts borrowing gambling funds from increasingly scary people.
Manny organises a travel-writing festival and invites a charming explorer to talk about his adventures. Fran soon falls for his twinkling eyes and lavish hair, leaving Manny ragingly jealous. Meanwhile, Bernard hires an assassin to solve a financial problem with his neighbour.
