In a desperate attempt for attention, Lily makes out with the nerdish next-door-neighbor, Brad O'Keefe, in his car. Sean, who went to get a bucket of chicken, is out walking the dog when he spies his daughter and the neighbor boy. So Sean responds in a very unorthodox way -- by lobbing fried chicken at the car. Elsewhere, Walt babysits Jimmy and Henry, and decides to teach them how to dig a hole. And Eddie stays in the house and tries to illegally hook up cable so that he and Sean can watch soft-core porn.

While looking for postage stamps, Sean inadvertantly finds a fake ID in Lily's bedroom. Concerned, Sean and Claudia break into Lily's email account, which only alerts Lily to their snooping. Lily, who's at a friend's house when she sees her screen-name sign on, sends her father on a wild goose chase to an alleged rave, which culminates with Sean and Eddie robbing, and being beaten up by, a dry cleaner.

I Wanna Be Suspended

Jimmy's science project, a model of the solar system, is due and he's eager to get back from the street fair to finish it. However, when Sean and Claudia find out The Ramones are playing, Jimmy's science project is forced to wait. Sean decides to write a note to Jimmy's principal, Sister Helen, to explain that he felt it was more important for Jimmy to attend the concert than to finish his science project. The note only ends up getting Jimmy suspended. To make it up to him, Sean and Eddie take Jimmy to the Statue of Liberty -- again with disasterous results.

When Lily gets a detention for wearing her uniform skirt too short, Sean becomes convinced Sister Helen has it out for his kids because she's always giving them detentions. Sean enlists a priest to help him convince the sister that his kids are good kids. Coincidentally, the priest turns out to be Tim, Sean's high school classmate and Claudia's ex-boyfriend. When Claudia learns that he's a priest and that she was his last girlfriend, she becomes concerned that she drove him to celibacy. Meanwhile, Sean tries to make his case with Father Tim, explaining that Lily was the only one given detention for wearing her skirts too short when most of the girls wear their skirts above the regulation length. To prove his point, Sean and Eddie had staked out the school to take pictures of other schoolgirls' skirts. The sister agrees the girls are wearing their skirts too short so she makes them all wear jumpers and tells them all it's because of Lily. And Jimmy tells Father Tim that he thinks he's possessed by Satan after Sean took him to see "The Exorcist." Jimmy's latest fear doesn't help Sean in his case with Father Tim.

Claudia returns home from her mother's to find Lily barricaded in her room. It seems that Sean and Lily had a bit of an altercation while she was gone. Lily told Sean she was going to her girlfriend's house, but somehow ended up at Action Mountain, an amusement park in New Jersey. Park security made Lily and her friends, who were drunk, call a parent to come get them. Sean was actually OK with picking up the kids and taking them home, playing the cool dad, until he realizes that Lily was playing him. She told her friends that they should call Sean since he's the only parent they could smooth talk into not getting upset.

Sean inherits $1,800 from his mother's estate. Lily wants him to give some of it to her so she can go on a class skiing trip. Sean wants to buy a Les Paul guitar that he has had his eye on for years. Claudia finds the guitar idea very sexy. He buys the guitar and Lily gets a job at a butcher shop to make Sean feel guilty for choosing the guitar over her. Eventually, Sean's guilt and desire to be a good father causes him to return the guitar and send Lily on the ski trip.

Claudia worries that she and Lily aren't as good friends as they used to be and plans a shopping trip to the outlet malls for just the two of them. While bonding, Lily confides in her mom that she's still a virgin. But just when things seem to be going really well, Lily ditches Caludia to hang out with older girls from school that she runs into at the mall. Claudia tries to be cool by impessing Lily's friends, but lets it slip that Lily's a virgin after Lily lies about it. Humiliated, Lily storms off and returns when Claudia's in the shower at the hotel. She packs up all their stuff except for the car keys and takes a cab home, leaving Claudia to drive home in her robe. Back at home, Sean, Eddie, Walt and the boys watch a knicks game, but Eddie roots for the Heat just to irk Sean.

Claudia only asks Sean to do one thing, take Henry to the barber before his choir recital that night. But by the time Sean, Eddie, Jimmy and Henry are done going to the movies, getting ice cream and watching a building explode, the barber shop is closed. Sean decides that he can cut Henry's hair himself, but naturally makes a major mess of Henry's whole head. When Claudia sees her son, the guys lie and say that Tony the barber was drunk, and Claudia goes to tell him off. Sean intercepts her, however, and tells her he'll handle it. Finally the truth comes out and Claudia wonders when she became the mom everyone is afraid of. Meanwhile, Eddie hooks Lily up with tickets to a private No Doubt concert, but Lily can't decide who to invite in order to best improve her social standing.

Claudia's friend Lina comes over with horrible news, her boyfriend is cheating on her with her sister. While Claudia tries to comfort Lina in the kitchen, Sean tries to keep Eddie from going in the kitchen to prey on the vulnerable woman. Walt wants to know why Sean can't help his brother out and put in a good word for him, and Sean recounts all the times he's tried to help Eddie and he's only hurt himself. Most notable, Sean recalls, was the time that he set Eddie up with a girl strange enough to like him, only to later learn that "Eddie is dead." Or at least that's what Eddie told the girl to get out of dating her. Things got out of hand when the story spread and the whole neighborhood thought that Sean and Claudia were grieving.

Catch Us If You Can

Claudia takes over the house for a bachelorette party while the boys go to a Yankee baseball game. At the game, Sean, wishing to fulfill his longtime dream of catching a baseball, grabs a home run ball out of David Justice's grasp, causing the Yankees to lose. A mob of angry fans chase the boys home, where they crash Claudia's party. Claudia, wanting just one night with the girls, is frustrated by the boys' return. Outside, hostile Yankee fans are waiting, ready to pounce on Sean A cop shows up at the door, and Sean is temporarily relieved. It turns out the cop is actually a stripper hired for Claudia's party.

Jimmy's Got a Gun

Sean and Claudia are concerned when Walt gets Jimmy a BB gun for his birthday. Sean's also a little disappointed that the steel drum he got for Jimmy gets ignored as soon as Jimmy opens the package with the gun. Walt explains that with supervision and safety equipment, Jimmy will be fine. Sean and Claudia want to take the gun away, but can't because Jimmy is so attached to it. When the boys start shooting everything from groceries to the steel drum Sean got for Jimmy, Sean draws the line. Sean and Walt have a stand-off over keeping the BB gun. Sean tells Walt that he is the boy's father and he will raise his family the way he sees fit. The stand-off leads to Walt telling Sean to shoot him in the butt to prove that it doesn't hurt and that BB guns aren't really dangerous. After a major provoking, Sean pulls the trigger and shoots his father in the rear and actually lands him the hospital.

Jimmy Was Kung-Fu Fighting

Sick of not being able to afford a real vacation, Sean and Claudia take on extra work shifts to pay for an all-inclusive Cancun trip. Claudia is upset to learn that Jimmy has been having a rough time with the school bully, Kyle. When Lily defends Jimmy, Kyle and his friends torment Jimmy even more. Lily herself is subjected to ridicule for beating up an 11-year-old. To prove she's cool, Lily gets her tongue pierced. Sean pleads with Sister Helen to put a stop to Jimmy's torment. Reluctantly, Sister Helen confronts Kyle, but she makes the matter worse. A desperate Jimmy seeks help from Eddie, who teaches him kung-fu moves. In a "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" sequence, Jimmy fantasizes using kung-fu kicks on Kyle and his cronies. Meanwhile, with Claudia working at night and Sean make his box macaroni and cheese every night, Henry resorts to digging through restaurant trash and begging for food.

Sean volunteers to referee Henry's soccer team and ends up making an unethical decision in the team's favor. Which in hindsight wasn't a great idea, when Henry gets an inflated ego. So Sean tries to make things right the following week by making an unethical decision in the opposing team's favor. . . Meanwhile, Lily flirts with the cute guy at the concession stand and the conversation leaves her walking on air. But when she starts to obsess over the introduction, she replays the scene over and over in her head, each time thinking that she made a bigger and bigger fool of herself.

Sean and Claudia try to explain to Lily what happened, but they make the real story sound bad. Sean and Claudia were dating in high school when Claudia got pregnant. Sean proposed marriage just to do the right thing. But that made Claudia angry and she refused to marry him just because he was "doing the right thing." Lily is upset to learn she was born out of wedlock -- a result of her parents' resentment. Elsewhere, Eddie has a rehearsal dinner fling with a bridesmaid, then tries to avoid the woman at the wedding.

Baby, You Can't Drive My Car

After the Finnerty's car is "stolen," Sean and Claudia excitedly look for a replacement car. Finally able to get a new car with the insurance money, Sean longingly eyes a sporty Probe and Claudia tries to talk him out of it. Meanwhile, Eddie tries to convince Sean and Claudia to add items to the insurance claim to jack up their pay-out Sean and Claudia debate the ethics of this and Claudia eventually convinces him to commit insurance fraud. Claudia discovers the spare keys to the car are missing. Just as she's about to call the police to report someone has stolen the keys from the house, Lily stops her. She confesses she took the keys so she and her boyfriend, Brad, can sit in the car and listen to a tape he made her. Sean and Claudia go easy on her because she came forward with the truth. However, their stripped car is returned to them by a tow truck -- the police have found it. Brad starts acting weird and the whole Finnerty family begin to grill him about what really happened to the car. During the interrogation Sean realizes Lily had more to do with the car disappearance than she's letting on. The truth comes out: Lily and Brad took the car to get burgers. While at the drive-thru she had an accident and broke the car's mirror and door off. Panciking, she calls Eddie for help. Eddie brings her to a chop shop run by his friend Anthony. While they are looking for parts, the car's back seat is stolen. Eddie replaces it with a futon. When they realize the car is too far damaged, Eddie suggests they just abandon it and pretend it was stolen. Lily is punished -- she will not be getting her learner's permit next year. When Sean and Eddie go back to the chop shop to get parts for the car, Sean is forced to pay $75 for his own back seat which has mysteriously turned up at the chop shop.

Dream On

Claudia tells Sean about a strange dream she had which ended with her having steamy sex with Eddie in an ally. Sean tells Eddie about the dream and his worries that Claudia is bored with their marriage. Sean decides to spice up their marriage. He rents a limo to whisk Claudia away for a romantic getaway and surprises her at work. Claudia is swamped at the restaurant where she works as hostess and tells Sean she can't possibly get away. He becomes even more angry when he notices she's not wearing her wedding ring. Claudia explains she gets better tips if the customers believe she's single. Sean becomes so outraged that when Claudia steps away to help a customer he steals her reservation book and dumps it on the street. Feeling guilty, he tries to get the book back, but it's missing. Sean goes home and tells his tale to Eddie, who says he knows where they can find the book. The do find the book from a street con man who asks $500 for the book. Sean refuses to pay and tries to take the book. The con man sprays Sean with pepper spray, and he flees without the book. Back at home, Claudia returns and apologizes to Sean for not being more receptive to his romantic efforts — still unaware that Sean stole her book. Sean comes clean and Claudia is furious. Eddie saves the day by returning with the book: he traded the con man for a bootleg copy of the new "Planet of the Apes" movie (which Eddie faked by putting a new label over an old movie). Elsewhere, Walt and the boys go apple picking. Walt brings home cider which turns out to be alcoholic. Thinking it's just apple juice, Lily and her girlfriend drink a lot of it and get drunk. Lily drunk-dials her crush, Jason, and gets him to come over. She makes a fool of herself when he arrives and Eddie kicks Jason out — believing he's the one who got her drunk.

Don't Let Me Download

Claudia is shocked to find some racy pictures downloaded on Jimmy's computer, and insists that she and Sean confront him about it, but Sean wants to ignore the situation. Later, Sean confesses to Walt that he downloaded the pictures, and its not long before Claudia discovers that Sean is the guilty culprit. Meanwhile, Lily gives Jimmy a picture of Sister Helen which they doctor and use as an e-mail joke. But when the e-mail is sent to Sister Helen, things aren't so funny anymore.

Sean and Eddie share a laugh when they see a kid nervously buying condoms at the store, but it's not very funny when Sean realizes it is Brad O'Keefe, his neighbor who has a crush on Lily. When Sean finds out that Brad's parents are out of town and that he is throwing a party—which Lily is attending—he immediately regrets telling Brad to live it up while his parents are away. When Lily doesn't come home from Brad's house by curfew, Sean is really worried....

Claudia comes to the rescue of her friend who is desperately in need of a band to play at her wedding and offers up Sean and Eddie's "band" to play at the reception. Sean reminds Claudia of their disastrous performance at a bar mitzvah in high school, but Claudia tells Sean how sexy musicians are and Sean and Eddie agree to do the gig. In need of a drummer to round out the band, they find Dean, a hot guy from a nearby public school. Sean quickly figures out that Lily is smitten with Dean; he's all too familiar with the way Lily is looking at Dean since that's how Claudia looked at him in high school, and he knows what that led to. Meanwhile, Henry is convinced he is adopted when he can't find any baby pictures of himself, but Jimmy assures him he's not adopted—he's actually a robot.

During a stressful day at work, Claudia takes a puff of a co-worker's cigarette which quickly turns into an entire cigarette and then a daily habit. Desperate to keep her smoking habit from Sean and the kids, Claudia tries her best to smoke without being found out, but is busted by Lily. Lily makes a deal with her - she won't say anything if Claudia will get her a cell phone and Claudia agrees. Sean thinks that Claudia's bizarre behavior lately has something to do with him, prompting him to buy her the expensive armoire Claudia was admiring recently at the flea market. When her quest for a cigarette leads to her digging through the trash and landing outside Brad O'Keefe's window, she realizes she has hit a new low and swears off her habit. Meanwhile, after setting a date with Dean on her new cell phone, Lily is humiliated to find out Dean heard her gushing about him when the phone didn't turn off.

Jimmy and his class are having a robot science fair. Sean goes all out to create a "first place" robot for Jimmy. When the judge of the fair calls Jimmy's robot "substantial robot" and "you could prop a door wide open with this!" Sean stands up and admits that he made his son's robot. He requests that the other parents do the same (It's obvious that the other robots were made by the parents.) In the end, Jimmy and his robot, fight Benji (his classmate) and his robot in a robot battle! Benji, who was marvelously acted wins!

Don't Fear the Reefer

Sean's takes a swing at tree surgery and ends up causing a blackout during the superbowl. But his biggest concern is what he saw through Lily's window while chopping the tree -- Lily holding a bag of pot. But what's even more shocking is where Lily got the weed: out of Sean's closet. With the blackout, Dan O'Keefe moves his Superbowl party to the Finnerty home, where they listen to a play-by-play given by Jimmy from his 5-inch TV.

When Sean shares this new information with his other work buddies, he realizes he has said too much about Paul and must do something to make it up to him. The Kids Are Alright

When Sean and Claudia win a free weekend in Atlantic City, Eddie offers to look after the boys while they are away. At first suspicious of his offer, they succumb because they desperately want the time away. But when they return from their trip to find Jimmy and Henry locked in the basement, they are shocked to find out that it was Lily and not Eddie who put them there. As Lily tries to explain what happened at home over the weekend, it becomes clear to Sean and Claudia that, surprisingly, Eddie was not such a bad choice to take care of the kids after all, even if he really did have an ulterior motive.

When Sean finally tires of Sister Helen's incessant criticism of his parenting skills, he starts to verbally fight back, leading her to retort with language one wouldn't expect to hear from a nun. After someone comes forward to back him up, Sean takes glee in blackmailing Sister Helen into doing a number of favors for him and his family, but his excitement doesn't last for long...

Claudia is shocked to see Sean working with a roadside correctional cleanup crew, but when she confronts him about it, he insists she must have been mistaken. Meanwhile Lily agonizes over the treatment of donkeys that are being used for the annual "donkey basketball" charity event at school, and she and Brad decide to take matters into their own hands.

In other events, Claudia is having a devil of a time keeping Henry and Jimmy from playing a violent video game condemned by Sister Helen -- but she winds up addicted to it herself.
