Hotshot attorney Kevin Hill's life changes overnight when he is given custody of his recently deceased cousin's 10-moth-old baby Sarah. As he struggles to adapt his lifestyle in order to care for Sarah, including hiring full-time nanny George, his law firm starts to cut back his workload because they feel he is unfocused. But Kevin, insulted by their actions, quits and lands a job at an all female boutique law firm that coincidentally is more understanding of his situation than he expected. Later, after settling into his new responsibilities, Kevin finds himself on the other side of the bench against his former law firm and his best friend, attorney Dame Ruiz when he must defend a woman who has accused a popular baseball player of sexual assault.
Believing she has been branded a bad mom simply because she is famous, Kevin agrees to defend rock star Carly Austin who's on the verge of losing her daughter, but when he stumbles across a very inebriated Carly at a late night soiree, Kevin discovers she not only deceived him but jeopardized her daughter's welfare, and battles whether to defend his client or do what is ethically responsible. Meanwhile, Dame feels like his best friend's bachelor lifestyle is being neglected, so he conducts an "intervention" and takes Kevin to a party, and when baby Sarah begins speaking her first words, Kevin worries whether she will call him "daddy."
Kevin and Nicolette pair up to defend Andrew LaFleur , the charismatic owner of a high end dating service being sued by a shy, introverted client who is distraught over "empty promises," but the two attorneys show little solidarity when it comes to their personal views on the matchmaker's practice and vehemently disagree on the best strategy to defend him. Meanwhile, Kevin uses every trick in the book to get Sarah into a highly competitive and extraordinarily exclusive preschool; in the meantime, Dame finds himself intrigued with Veronica when the two go to a basketball game together.
In order to get temporary custody over baby Sarah, Kevin must convince court-appointed social worker Eleanor Frank that he's fit to be a guardian, but after realizing that he's not well prepared, Kevin scrambles to tie up loose ends, including finding Sarah a doctor, forcing him to call in a favor from a female pediatrician he once dated and dumped unceremoniously.Meanwhile, Kevin and Nicolette represent a 22-year-old woman who is being sued by her mother because of bad investment decisions on her $7 million trust fund, which she made by "consulting" with her father who is deceased.
Kevin and Veronica tag team to defend a hotshot hockey player who was fired after attacking an unruly fan, but when their feisty client decides to throw in the towel in the middle of a winning case, Kevin is determined to find out why and uncovers the secret behind his client's sudden change of heart.
Grey & Associates takes on a sexual discrimination lawsuit representing a young female sales rep claiming to have been unjustly terminated from her job, but as the mountain of evidence begins to pile up against them, Kevin uncovers a smoking gun that just might save his client.
Stranded at home after catching Sarah's flu, Kevin is stuck coaching from the sidelines as Veronica is left to defend a school teacher who was fired after the administrator learned of her porn star past, but when she finds herself across the bench from Dame, she quickly gets into trouble when she ignores Kevin's warnings about his friend's ruthless tactics in the courtroom.
Jessie goes into full legal battle mode to keep her son when her ex sues for custody. When Kevin represents the cheerleading squad of a local pro team, romantic sparks ignite between him and the beautiful, strong-minded opposing council.
Kevin and Veronica must defend a bigamist husband seeking joint custody of his children from multiple wives.
Kevin and Veronica must defend a woman who has mistakenly been put on the watch list as a potential threat to the security of the United States. Meanwhile, Kevin is labeled as just a "nice guy" in the press after he unknowingly goes on a date with a newspaper columnist known for writing about her dating escapades. Later, Nicolette loses a bet to Veronica and must keep an eye on Jessie's college-age nephew.
Kevin wrestles with the demeaning allegations against his law school mentor when he agrees to represent him in a sexual harassment lawsuit against a female student.
Kevin represents the widow of a former colleague when she sues his old firm for literally working her husband to death.
Kevin represents the parents of a soldier killed in Iraq who are suing the school where he was recruited.
Kevin represents a psychiatrist being sued by a couple who blames him when their troubled teenage son visits a prostitute as part of his therapy. Meanwhile, Monroe, one of Kevin's scorned ex-lovers, seeks revenge by sabotaging his love life. Later, desperate for some piece and quiet, George agrees to date a dull construction worker in order for his crew to stop working during Sarah's naptime. (UPN)
After Dame's client loses confidence in him, he enlists Kevin's help behind Dame's back. Kevin tries to defend a professional boxer from going to jail over a deadly barroom brawl while at the same time keeping his feelings in check about how he feels Dame has handled the case thus far. Kevin is also fighting a battle outside the court room as his on again, off again relationship with Monroe causes George to consider quitting after Kevin breaks a promise to him.
