Today is the first day of the rest of Earl Hickey's life. After coming into a $100,000 scratch-off lottery ticket and losing it just as fast upon being hit by a car, Earl has an epiphany in the hospital--to make up for all the terrible things he's done in the past. With his brother Randy and a motel maid named Catalina, Earl writes up a list of every misdeed he was a part of. Earl sets out to do just that, starting with #64--Kenny James, a boy he picked on in elementary school.

Earl sets out to mend his relationship with his father Carl (guest star Beau Bridges) by trying to cross number four off of his list: "blew dad's chance to be elected mayor." Four years prior, Carl ran for mayor to oppose the other candidate's plan to redirect airplane traffic away from the affluent part of town and towards Carl's neighbourhood. His campaign was going very well, until a misunderstanding between Earl and a police officer was caught on tape and broadcast as the opposing candidate's campaign commercial. Now Earl submits his father's name to run again, even though Carl is adamant that he does not want to be mayor. Earl, Randy, and Catalina recruit unregistered voters to boost Carl's numbers, hoping to win not only the election for Carl, but also a relationship with his father for Earl.
As the holiday season comes under way a few secrets are exposed when Earl attempts to cross number seventy-four off of his list: "always ruined Joy's Christmas." Earl, Randy, and Catalina enter a radio contest to win a brand new car for Joy to make up for all of the thoughtless Christmas presents Earl gave her while they were married. While Randy and Catalina vie over the car, Earl finds out that Joy's parents believe that he's still their son-in-law and that he's just returned from the war in Iraq. Joy is afraid to tell her father, an alleged racist, that she is now married to Darnell, so Earl plays the part, afraid of ruining another one of her Christmases.
When trying to enroll her children into the Right Choice Ranch for troubled youth, Joy is denied enrollment because of a barn burning incident at the hands of a younger Earl. Earl, Randy and Catalina travel to the camp to make amends for the barn burning by building a pen for the camp’s ostrich. Earl learns the real reason behind the barn burning incident and decides that every incident on his list after the fire should be shared by Randy.
When Earl and Randy try to return a stolen wallet they find out taking the money had cost two newlyweds their honeymoon. In an attempt to make things right Earl takes over for the groom at his fast food restaurant. After time Earl finds out the boss is a jerk and Earl wonders how such a man with a luxurious house and beautiful wife could not be affected by the only thing he believes in, Karma.
Earl crosses another number off the list when he returns Pops’ Weiner Hot Dog cart he and Ralph (Giovanni Ribisi) stole in his youth. The good deed does not last long as Ralph, who works for a competing franchise sets fire to Pops cart. Earl now must set things right with a bizarre plan while recruiting Randy, Joy, Catalina and Darnell to assist him.
Earl tackles number eighteen on his list when one of his old friends is arrested. Remebering that he told an inappropriate story at his birthday party he must give him one great day to make up the the terrible one before he was sent to prison.
Earl takes his car troubles as a sign that it is time for him to redeem himself for a long run of stealing gas out of a complete stranger's car.
Earl's nervous about returning a laptop computer he stole from a college professor, mostly because he's uncomfortable around smart people. When the professor turns out to be a beautiful woman, he feels even more ill at ease, until she flatters him and asks him to speak about his list in front of her class. Meanwhile, Randy experiences fraternity life---and absolutely loves it.

Darnell convinces the gang to believe that Y2K will signal the end of the world and they, happily, will be the last people on Earth.

While hanging out next to a storm drain, Earl and Randy come across an object from their past--a police badge. Several years earlier, Earl, Randy and Joy engaged in a scam in which they stole people's shoes, including the contents inside, at a bowling alley. One item this scam yielded was a police badge. With the reemergence of this badge, Earl tracks down the police officer it belonged to in order to take care of number 127 on his list, "stole a badge from a police officer." Earl finds that the cop suffered a demotion as a result of having his badge stolen. Earl devises a tactic to get the officer's job back.
Earl attempts to cross out number 147 on his list "Shot Gwen Waters with a BB Gun". To make things right he must reunite Gwen with her estranged father which Earl finds increasingly difficult.
In the season finale, Earl decides to cross off the first number on his karma list, “Stole ten dollars from a guy at the Camden Market.” Earl to his dismay finds out that he owes much more than ten dollars, in fact he must surrender all his lotto winnings. Earl now ponders when karma is going to help him with his misfortunes.

Going against his established good nature, Earl decides to take Joy's side and help cover up her criminal activities.

Joy (Jaime Pressly) and Darnell (Eddie Steeples), meanwhile, deal with the repercussions of Joy's breaking the law.
As number 56 on his list, Earl (Jason Lee) decides to return an award winning cat back to its rightful owner after attempting to sabotage a cat show in Joy's (Jaime Pressly) favor. However, when Randy (Ethan Suplee) and Earl return the cat back to its owner they find that the once champion kitty has lost all of its award winning qualities. Meanwhile, an attraction forms between Randy and the cat owner, which helps Randy discover a lot about his true self.

As pressure mounts for Earl to save his friendship with Ralph and put together a reunion show for Phish Tahko, Earl realizes that partying like a rock star might be the only way he can get through the night.

Catalina discovers an undelivered letter stuck at the bottom, and Earl is determined to find its rightful owner. Turns out it's a long lost love letter from trailer park resident Will (Johnny Sneed) to his former gym co-worker Wendy (Jenny McCarthy). Earl agrees to keep an eye on Wendy while Will gets back into shape for her. Meanwhile, Joy (Jaime Pressly) kicks Darnell (Eddie Steeples) out after discovering he's in the witness protection program.
In the midst of a heat wave, Earl (Jason Lee) remembers number 26 on his list - "Robbed a Stoner Blind." In his attempt to cross it off his list, Earl and Randy (Ethan Suplee) find Woody (guest star Christian Slater), the stoner they robbed, living an eco-friendly life in a commune. The only way Woody will let Earl cross him off his list is if Earl and Randy live an environmentally conscious life in the commune with him for a week. As Earl's newfound insight on the environment becomes more extreme, his new mission is to save the world from global warming.
Earl tackles number 146 on his list. He decides to make 274 bologna sandwiches for Kenny, because he stole them from him in school when they were kids. While delivering the sandwiches, Earl moves onto a new mission, to teach Kenny how to gamble, but has trouble stopping. Joy goes to group therapy for her anger management issues.

When Randy visits his parents to make up for their ruined vacation, he realizes that he forgot to tell them about Earl's prison sentence and the following coma, at all. A flashback takes us back to when Earl and Randy ruined their parents' vacation due to a stolen duffel bag full of weed.
When the hospital wants to get rid of Earl, Randy decides to take care of his brother by himself. But instead of working on the list for Earl, he uses Earl's help to cross things off in order to help him get better.
When Earl finally wakes up from his coma, he believes in Karma again and considers Billie his soul mate, but he doesn't know where to find her, so he asks her ex-boyfriend Frank for help.
Inspired by Earl, Billie starts a list of her own and when Earl is getting annoyed by Billie's little habits, he decides to focus on working on the list instead. He picks a task that is on both of their lists, atones for the injury of a champion grocery-bagger and discovers a unique talent of his own. But Earl soon finds out that they have different ways of interpreting Karma.
When Earl can't get along with Billie, he tries to find the reason Karma brought the two together, so he continues to work on the list. He finds out that working on the list, especially on items where he pissed off a girl, helps to change Billie's behavior to the better.
When Earl finds out that making up for all the bad things he did to women changes Billie's behaviour to the good, he picks the worst thing he ever did to women on his list. Billie wants him to choose between her and his list. When he picks the list, she steals it and starts un-doing the items he has already accomplished.
Joy's latest con reminds Earl of a wish he stole from a dying child named Buddy, so ten years after that, he visits the kid's mother, only to find out that Buddy is very much alive. Buddy has the vision of a movie, and he wants Earl to help him produce it.
Earl takes on #87 on his list, "chased away Mum and Dad's friends", so he and Randy visit their parents to bring back their old friends. Soon they realize that back then a lot more was going on than children's eyes can see.
Earl gets a hot tub for Joy from a dubious source, and in return, Joy gets a toe infection from it, confining her to her home. Earl has to take over Joy's role and do all the things she would normally do, which gives him some revelations about the Turners and his kids.
Earl wants to make up for a stolen and destroyed RV from a war veteran, while Joy hunts for the legend of Pigsquatch.
