Aspiring New York doctor Zoe Hart thinks she has her future mapped out until she is turned down for a prestigious fellowship that she felt confident she would receive. Desperately seeking experience, she accepts an offer from a friendly stranger, Harley Wilkes, a doctor she met at her medical school graduation and a man who had offered Zoe an opportunity to join his small medical practice in Bluebell, Alabama.
Hoping it might help the residents of Bluebell accept her as one of their own, Zoe accepts an invitation to join Mayor Hayes on his float in the Founder's Day Parade. However, Zoe accidentally crashes his float, hurting her chances of winning over Lemon and the Bluebell residents. In addition, George Tucker, Bluebell's golden boy, informs Zoe that she is contractually obligated to bring in at least thirty percent of the business at the medical practice, otherwise Dr. Brick Breeland will have the option to buy out her half of the practice.
Zoe sets her sights on winning Bluebell's gumbo contest to show everyone that she wants to be part of the community, hoping that a win will help her land some patients. Lavon develops a crush on Zoe and Brick's new receptionist, Didi, but things get uncomfortable when Lemon learns about this. Zoe and Brick are forced to work together to perform a life-saving surgery.
When a heat wave rolls through Bluebell, Zoe realizes that the hot weather is affecting everyone's behavior and lowering their inhibitions. In fact, Zoe struggles to fight her heat-induced attraction to Wade until she finally gives in. Meanwhile, Lemon is determined to win over George's parents when they come to town for a visit, but she is caught off guard when Lavon shows up to the same restaurant with his date, Didi.
Zoe makes a surprising discovery about the local minister and his wife, causing quite a stir among the residents of Bluebell. Lemon is determined to raise the money needed to restore Bluebell's historic bridge that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, but she must first convince Lavon to choose her submission over many other worthwhile proposals.
On her way home from a late night house call, Zoe accidentally hits a man with her car but can't find any signs of him when she gets out and looks for him. Later she sees the man's picture hanging in the Rammer Jammer, and George informs Zoe that the man died more than a year ago. Meanwhile, Lemon and George are prepared to purchase their dream home, but Lavon refuses to authorize the purchase because the house is one of Bluebell's historic properties. Zoe's mom arrives in Bluebell hoping to reconcile with her daughter after keeping the identity of Zoe's real father a secret for Zoe's entire life.
After Nascar driver Brian Vickers is unable to host the Bluebell Junior League's annual turtle race, Lemon decides that Levon is the perfect candidate to co-host the event with her. Dr. Judson Lyons, a handsome local veterinarian, asks Zoe out on a date, and Wade has a surprise visitor who causes all kinds of trouble for him.
Levon notices that Zoe is feeling homesick and asks her to host his annual pre-game homecoming party to help her feel more connected to Bluebell. Zoe gladly accepts his offer and asks her New York friend Gigi for help. Zoe learns, however, that New York and Bluebell have very different ideas of what makes a good party. Meanwhile, George and Wade devise a plan to get revenge on their high school nemesis, Jimmy. When when Lemon learns of their scheme, she wants in on the action, too.
As Bluebell's residents prepare for the annual Planksgiving celebration, Zoe anxiously waits for her return home to New York City for Thanksgiving. Before she can leave town, however, Zoe has to reach her thirty percent quota of patients by midnight or she will lose her share of the practice to Brick. Meanwhile, Lavon encourages Wade to be honest about his feelings for Zoe, and George's father offers him a job at his law firm in Montgomery, which Lemon is not pleased to hear.
Zoe encourages Rose to enter Bluebell's annual Miss Cinnamon Cider Pageant even though Lemon's younger sister, Magnolia, is the clear favorite to win. With Zoe coaching Rose and Lemon coaching Magnolia, the rivalry rises to a whole new level. Flashbacks reveal some of the history behind Lemon's relationship with her mother and the details of when Lemon and Lavon first realized they had a connection.
When Zoe goes in search of some family history in Bluebell, she discovers that she is a legacy to the Bluebell Belles. Of course, once Lemon catches wind of the news, she makes it her sole mission in life to make sure Zoe doesn't become an official Belle and puts her through a humiliating initiation. With the help of Wade, Lavon attempts to jump back into the dating scene, but he finds it difficult because Didi is telling everyone that he's in love with her. Meanwhile, George devises a plan to stop a huge chainstore from building near Bluebell and as a result driving business away from the town.
