In 52 B.C., Caesar has just conquered Gaul. Two soldiers are enlisted to find the army's stolen gold standard. The Senate worries about Caesar's popularity and Pompey Magnus conspires with them against Casear. Atia is careful to play both sides of an escalating power struggle.
After eight years away at war, Lucius Vorenus returns to an homecoming he wasn't expecting.Titus Pullo's actions might soon become trouble for the Republic. Meanwhile, Mark Antony enters public office a tribune for the people and Cesar begins his mobilization for his return trip to Rome.
With Caesar quickly advancing toward Rome, Pompey begins ordering a retreat and forces his citizens to pick sides. Timon is forced to do Atia's dirty work and Vorenus cannot understand why no one is resisting while on a scouting mission.
Atia throws party to honor Caesar after he takes control of Rome. Caesar ask for auguries to be taken. Quintus Pompey's mission to retrieve stolen gold does not go well. Vorenus throws a feast to kick off his new career as a businessman. Pullo's good furtune runs out.
Caesar contemplates Pompey's counteroffer. Vorenus continues to struggle as a businessman and must reevaluate his career choice. Atia schemes to come between Caesar and Servilla. Pullo seeks Octavian's help.
When Caeser finds himself outnumbered by Pompey's legions, he asks Antony to join the fight. Marc Antony is having fun in his new political life while he ponders a counter-offer from Pompey. Atia urges Octavian to take another step toward manhood. Vorenus and Niobe try to bring passion back to their marriage.
Pompey attacks an outnumbered Caesar. Vorenus and Pullo are stranded at sea. Atia continues to seek out Servilla's friendship in order to ensure her protection, while Octavia and Servilla's bond grows.
Caesar pursues Pompey to Egypt, where he meets Ptolemy XIII in Alexandria. Vorenus and Pullo rescue Cleopatra.
With Scipio and Cato defeated, Caesar returns home to a hero's welcome. Vorenus and Pullo's showdown with local thug Erastes gets an unexpected reprieve from Caesar. Servilia's plan to use Octavia to unearth a secret about Caesar backfires.
Unanimously proclaimed Dictator by the Senate, Caesar pronounces the war over, and prepares for five days of feasting and games honoring his "triumph." No longer an enlisted soldier, Pullo eyes a pastoral future with Eirene; Vorenus runs for municipal magistrate, with Posca's help; Octavian retrieves Octavia from her self-imposed exile; and Servilia invites a revenge-minded Quintus Pompey into her home, to Brutus' dismay.
Vorenus sees to it that veteran soldiers receives severance on behalf of Caesar, and is then invited along with Niobe to one of Atia's parties. Pullo decent catches up with him. Caesar must decide how to deal with Brutus.
Pullo and Vorenus are now heroes in the eyes of the Roman rank and file because of their arena feats. This causes Caesar to bestow rewards to those he might normally punish.
The second season begins shortly after Caesar's murder. Octavian devises a plan to keep his family from fleeing the city, news that Antony happily delivers to a nervous Brutus. Meanwhile, Vorenus mourns Niobe's death but curses his children, and Pullo and Eirene get married without knowing what's happened back in Rome.
Octavian's endless demands for his inheritance rankle Antony, who is distracted by a visit from Cleopatra; Vorenus is ordered to quell the chaos among the Aventine merchants that he helped create by killing Erastes; Timon is surprised by his brother's arrival from Jerusalem.
Pullo tries in vain to persuade Vorenus to prevent a war among Aventine gangs; Antony's designs on Gaul elicit a shocking proclamation from Cicero to the Senate; Servilia enlists the opportunistic Duro to end an old feud; Brutus wrestles with his demons while seeking support in Bithynia.
Pullo races to find Vorenus with news of the fate of his children; Servilia pays a price for trying to eliminate a rival; a victorious Octavian sends word he's returning to Rome with his army, which comes as a surprise to Cicero; Timon grows weary of doing his mistress's bidding.
Despite Pullo's advice, Vorenus and his family return to the Collegium with his family who is reunited, and cleansed of their ordeal. Octavian is denied a triumph and urges Cicero to endorse his bid to be made Consul in exchange for an agreement to allow Cicero to veto his actions. Octavian and Atia and Octavia are reunited. although Octavia disapproves of what her brother has become. Octavian takes both Cicero and the Senate by surprise with his first Consular act. Vorenus attempts' to make peace with Memmio and Cotta create suspicions that he has gone soft. Two adversaries patch up their differences in order to deal with Brutus and Cassius's army.
Vorenus receives orders to plunge Rome into a bloodbath the likes that have not been seen since the dictatorship of Sulla. Octavia reveals her secret to Atia, and the armies of the Liberators and the Caesarians clash for the last time, with the fate of Republic in the balance.
Antony's nature reasserts itself, and challenges his alliance with Octavian. Timon and Levi set themselves against Herod's plans. Servilia's public displays of grief leave Atia unsettled. Gaia uses Pullo's punishment as a weapon against him. His daughter's sudden interest in business matters arouses Vorenus' suspicions. Posca gets married.
